Dear Colleague:
The 2007-2008 ComSci class has graduated and the
Secretary of Commerce has announced the selection of the 2008-2009 class
that will begin in September. As one year closes and another is
waiting in the wings, it's a good to time to reflect on the privilege of
being the ComSci director.
I get to work with the best. ComSci Fellows
are the talented leaders of tomorrow. ComSci speakers
are today's noted experts who share their time, thoughts, talents,
skills, expertise, wisdom, vision, and more. In their very busy lives they
make themselves available as a resource and an inspiration for those who will
follow. As ComSci director, I get to be there and help it all
unfold. Not bad for a little girl from Singac, NJ.

2007-2008 ComSci Fellows Graduate
 2007-2008 ComSci Fellows
Just over 70 guests attended the 2007-2008 ComSci graduation
ceremony and reception held on June 26 in the Secretary's Conference and
Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the Commerce Department.
Deputy Director Dr. James M. Turner of the National Institute of
Standards and Technology introduced guest speaker Dr. Kathie Olsen, deputy
director and chief operating officer of the National Science
Foundation, who set her talk "Hitting the High Notes of Leadership" to
music. Punctuated with strains of "Celebrate," "I've Been Everywhere" and
"I Did It My Way," Olson spoke of her career and provided advice to the
graduating ComSci Fellows, saying "If you keep the high moral ground, you will
always be able to respect yourself."
ComSci alumni were well-represented at the event. Among the
guests was Steacy Hicks, 83 years young and a member of ComSci's first class in
1964-1965. |

"Can America Compete
...
Can I Compete?"
 Norman Augustine, retired
chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, posed that question
to ComSci Fellows when he met with them in May. Augustine covered a
broad range of topics that spanned a career filled with achievement in
the public and private sectors and community service.
From a teacher that motivated him, to the unusual way he chose
his major while at Princeton, to his move up the corporate ladder,
Augustine's talk was open and engaging as he took frequent questions
from the Fellows.
He advised that one should not force a career path but rather be
prepared to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves.
He talked about the need for science to have a better voice in
politics and discussed the 2007 report "Rising Above the
Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic
Future." Augustine chaired the committee that authored the report, and
he spoke of the challenges the United States faces in its K-12
education system, particularly in math and science, coupled with a need for
more K-12 teachers that can excite students in those subject areas.
Augustine also talked about the qualities and characteristics of
leadership. Cited among the ones he most admires are a strong moral
compass (integrity), selflessness, and energy. | |
