Dear Colleagues:

It has been the ComSci tradition for the Fellows to introduce themselves to our guest speakers. Recently, we were honored to have Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman meet with the Fellows. In a very nice turn of events, the Secretary walked into the room and individually shook hands with, and introduced himself to, each of the Fellows and guests. It made quite an opening impression and one that will remain a special memory from this year's ComSci Program.

I hope you enjoy hearing about ComSci activities.

Energy Secretary Bodman Meets With ComSci Fellows

1964-65 ComSci Class   Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman joined the 2007-2008 ComSci Fellows in lunch hour discussion.

At the April 24, ComSci meeting, Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman provided an overview of the Department of Energy (DOE) and discussed its diverse mission. In his talk, the Secretary touched on the structure of the DOE, the department's top priorities and challenges, and the FY09 budget.  Deputy Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology James Turner, formerly with the DOE, introduced Bodman.

In addition to discussing science and energy-related challenges, Bodman also talked about management issues and emphasized that the person "at the top" should not only be qualified but needs to care. Clearly dedicated to improving and promoting safety in the workplace, Bodman cited attention to safety one of his proudest achievements in federal service.

Following the talk, ComSci Fellow Carolyn Schmidt said, "I appreciate the informality and frankness of the Secretary.
Reaching Out to the Community

1964-65 ComSci Class
Shepherd Elementary School (Washington, DC) student Jock Pollack shares his science project with Fellow Meka Laster .

Throughout the past year, the 2007-2008 ComSci Fellows have been showing up at science fairs, in class rooms, at Boy Scout meetings, and at museums, all with a mission and a good cause. To date, the Fellows have donated more than 200 community service hours to science-related education projects.

Meka Laster of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) served as a mentor to Jock Pollack (both shown above) as he prepared a science fair project on rockets. Jock's rocket launched and reached a height of thirty feet.

In a note of thanks to ComSci Fellow Ken Iwanski, Deborah Cogliano, middle school science teacher at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Annandale, VA, reported, "I don't know if you recall the wind tunnel experiment but he [the student] has made the adjustments you suggested and researched all that you suggested.  That experiment is going to the Diocesan Fair.  Your time and expertise was greatly appreciated."

Speaking of the Montgomery Area Science Fair judges (including seven ComSci Fellows), Pepper D. Buckley, ScienceMONTGOMERY fair director said, "Talking to YOU will be the highlight of the day, more than any other prize we offer.  You are the backbone, the gear shaft and the supernova of our fair!"

Ross Shonat, ComSci Fellow from the National Institutes of Health, served on the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations' curriculum advisory committee and the Science Subcommittee of the County's Curriculum Advisory Committee.

Donna McNamara, ComSci Fellow from NOAA, helped a Boy Scout troop earn their Weather merit badges. Similarly, Nestor Ramirez of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will take Boy Scout Troop 1352 of Lake Ridge, VA, through the process of earning their merit badges in space exploration.

ComSci Fellows "Go To Court..."

...that is to the Supreme Court.  The Fellows visited the Supreme Court for a court room lecture on the history and operation of the court, followed by a meeting with Clerk of the Court William K. Suter. Mr. Suter, in his position since 1991, further discussed the operation of the Supreme Court and provided insight into the traditions of the Court and the interaction amongst the Justices.

Save the Date!

June 26, 2008, is the date for the graduation of the 2007-2008 ComSci Class.  The graduation ceremony will be held in the Secretary's Conference and Reception Rooms at the Department of Commerce.  Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez is invited to speak. Additional details will be made available by the end of May.
