The Fellowship Experience

The ComSci Program enriches its participants in many ways, personally and professionally. For many participants, the highlights of the program center on the seminars and lively debate — the opportunity to meet leaders in government, academia, and the private sector. For others, the highlights center on the overall fellowship experience, the individual and shared learning, the personal networking, and the making of friendships that last far beyond the program. Enhanced knowledge and leadership capability is a hallmark for all the participants.

The words of the Fellows speak best to the ComSci experience:

"Listening to a different speaker each week and engaging in discussions on a variety of topics from stem cell research to nanotechnology to the Alaskan petroleum reserve to the origins of human species opened my eyes to the power and complexity of applying science and technology to address the whole gamut of society's needs and problems. Interacting with the other fellows and listening to their presentations made me appreciate the kind of work that they do as well as their knowledge and perspectives on a wide range of issues."

"The ComSci program strengthened my leadership competencies, thus enhancing my effectiveness in my current position. The field trips broadened my understanding of science and technology management efforts in a variety of public, private, and non-profit arenas. I was able to bring back "lessons learned" that were directly applicable to my organization."

"Most of all, the program made me proud to be a federal employee. I was impressed by the dedication, knowledge, and high level of research being done by the people who briefed us and by my ComSci colleagues."

"The ComSci program provided me with opportunities to see technology implemented first hand and to broaden my experiences in a way that would be otherwise impossible."

"The friends and contacts made during the months of the program will prove invaluable as I move forward in my government career in fostering a continued partnership across agencies."

"One of the most rewarding aspects of the ComSci program was the opportunity to network with fellows from other federal agencies, and to learn about their involvement and roles in the science and technology arena in their respective agencies."

"My experiences from the Fellowship will influence me throughout the remainder of my career. I cannot think of a better way to have accomplished so much in so little time."

"The knowledge I have gotten from the many outstanding speakers we have had over the past ten months has been enhanced by the informal discussion I have had with my ComSci colleagues following seminars and site visits."

"I believe that my leadership capabilities are stronger as a result of the ComSci Fellowship. The policy context and appreciation for the impact of science and technology on the U.S. industrial base and the national economy will no doubt serve me well both in my current position and in future roles."
